Meet the Mechanic - Lee
How did you begin working in the commercial vehicle industry?
I went to college initially after school, at the time there weren’t many ways to get into the commercial vehicle industry, so I started working in IT. After a while, I went to my uncle’s workplace and got my trailer qualifications and HGV Class 1 and 2. I was there working under someone for 6 months and then after that, I was doing MOTs on my own and moved to TIP. It’s been a steep learning curve!
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
In the morning when I get in, I start off with any unfinished jobs from the day before. Throughout the day I have to keep monitoring time as we work to meet deadlines. My days can consist of doing a suspension job, electrics job and then a roof job. If one of my colleagues is off, I cover him to drive our trailers to MOTs too.
What do you like about working for TIP?
Since I was young, I’ve enjoyed messing about with cars, bikes etc. I like getting my hands dirty and I definitely do this at TIP. I like the variety of the job, each day is different for me.
What are the top 3 most valuable skills you’ve learnt whilst working at TIP?
I came from an old school company, logging everything on a tablet was new for me. I’ve tried it previously at other employers and it hasn’t worked that well, but it works very well here. I’ve also learnt to book my parts myself and how to use specialist equipment. Where I used to work, the process was to do the best you can with what you have but at TIP, we have the proper tooling to do a good job.
What is your biggest work achievement?
I’m proud that I’ve got my HGV Class 1 Licence, I’ve been able to use it at TIP to help with cover.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
During my free time, I do a lot of cycling and also spend a lot of time with my son. He’s getting into his bikes now so we go riding together. I’m also a big Manchester United supporter.
Can you tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
I was once joint 64th in the world at Darts!
