I am James Downes, the IT Infrastructure Intern at TIP. I was born in Cardiff, live in Lytham St. Annes and now studying Computer Science at the University of Manchester. In my spare time, I like cooking and getting outdoors. The team at TIP has been great so far. Everyone is supportive and approachable. I’m looking forward to what the rest of my time at TIP will bring!

Describe your experience at TIP in three words:

Freedom, thought-provoking and calm. 

What does a typical day for you involve?

Checking the network for outages, writing scripts and sending many, many emails.

What have you learned/developed since the start of your internship?

My knowledge and understanding of the Microsoft suite and Networking Technologies.

What is your favourite thing about working for TIP?

That I am allowed to pursue whatever interests me.

What is one thing that makes your day instantly better?

A hot shower

Warning: Can be extremely pedantic at times

Do you have a secret talent?

I can water ski

What is your most unpopular opinion?

I’d prefer to be too hot rather than too cold.

 

About the Role

The Role:

  • Maintain TIP’s extensive network infrastructure

  • Administrate and Monitor the Cisco Meraki LAN and Versa SD-WAN Network 

  • Assist in the management and configuration of the Samsung Tablet stock

  • Support the 8x8 Telephony solution.

  • The ‘Go to’ IT contact for end-user support, including assisting with End User Compute, Network, Telephony and Mobility issues

  • Management of ticket queue(s) within the ServiceNow ITSM platform.

  • Responsibility for managing your own stockroom and storage unit

  • Corresponding with 3rd party service providers and suppliers

  • Take part in multiple projects happening across the IT Team

  • Training and Development opportunities including ITIL V4 and studying towards Microsoft Certifications 

  • Participate in Intern projects/meetings/events and assist in the recruitment of your future replacement
