Energy Recuperation Axle
In the cold chain services sector, trailers can now generate their own electricity from wheel movement and braking. This technology has been used in the United States for more than three years and benefits companies like McDonald's by powering tail lifts and pallet trucks. It is particularly promising for temperature-controlled trailers.
With an integrated generator, these trailers can run refrigeration units while in motion and charge onboard batteries, keeping things fresh for up to 90 minutes when stationary. This innovation reduces dependence on the electricity grid, aligns with sustainability goals and increases flexibility while reducing product cooling costs.
The results from our 5+ years of testing are very positive. In 2023, we are working with three transport companies that are driving for Albert Heijn – the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands – for a 12-month join pilot with Thermo King and BPW.
